Marsh Harbor was lots of fun, very modern...found a good conch horn, as you could see from our last blog's pics...Dwayne is starting to blow it now at sunset with me and he outblows me (hmmm.. more hot air! HA!We were able to fill our water tanks on Monday.. had a good amount of rain and used the water collection system on SeaVeyor. Thank you Mother nature and the Poles!! On Tuesday we provisioned with fuel, groceries and another laundry run.....afterwards, had sundowners on Hocus Pocus (another Catamaran) and GodSpeed came over too..fun time had by all.
On Wednesday we pulled anchor and were getting ready to go and noticed that GodSpeed was having some difficulty... their anchor was stuck on some sort of old cable or chain. Pat ended up having to dive on it and before Dwayne could put our dinghy in the water to help him, another cruiser in his dinghy came by and helped him release it..We were all under way after that.. The cruise to Green Turtle was not too long. The hardest part was having to pass thru Whale Channel. You must leave the Sea of Abaco and go thru this channel and then back to the Sea of Abaco to reach Green Turtle Cay.The waters in the inland sea just south of Green Turtle are very shallow with shoals, etc..So, one must go out the Whale Channel and then back in. This channel can be very dangerous when the conditions are poor.... high seas can cause "rages",which are powerful swells and you do not even think about crossing .... When we made the cross thu the channel, it was not smooth, but not too bad either.. We arrived in White Sound and dropped anchor mid afternoon... settled in for the evening after making sure our ground tackle was holding.. it's very grassy on the bottom here and not ideal for holding, but we have been fine.. thanks to our Rocna anchor...
Woke up to a beautiful day on Thursday, April 29th. We dinghed to shore along with Pat and Lorrie from GodSpeed. We took my little foldup bike "PeeWee" and Dwayne had to rent one.. Pat and Lorrie had their own bikes with them. Off we went for a day of exploration. The island is only about 3 miles long, so we were in Black Sound and the New Plymouth settlement fairly quickly..New Plymouth is a very quaint settlement with Old World charm. It was developed from the loyalists(British) that left America after the Revolutionary War.. We visited the Albert Lowe museum which gives a fasinating history of the island and it's inhabitants.. the old photographs and paintings were awesome.. The Hurricane of 1932 devasted the island and the before and after pics were something to see..We were guided thru the museum and given the information by it's caretaker, a local islander. She was very gracious and very informative and loved giving us the input on each and every photo, etc..We also visited Vert's Model Ship Shoppe.. He is a son of Albert Lowe (one of the founding locals) He was very happy to give us the lowdown on all of his ships, etc in his shop.. We also made it over to The Wrecking Tree restaraunt and had cracked conch, conch salad, and my favorite, grouper fingers..and of course a round of Kaliks (Bahamian beer) in honor of Lorrie's birthday.
We went ashore again on Friday, April 30th.. This is the weekend that Green Turtle has their homecoming festivites... they had their prime minister, Marching Military Bands, lots of kids singing Bahamian songs, lots of food etc and of course, sessions on how to be a pirate, etc.. We enjoyed their grilled BBQ and spicy rice and made our way back into town for some coconut ice cream... then back to SeaVeyor.. The boys decided to try some bone fishing and took the dinghy back to shore and walked over to the flats side.. so Lorrie and I followed in her dinghy and found the path to the ocean side and walked the beach..It was a wonderful day.. This island will be one of my favorites, I'm sure!
Today is Saturday.. May 1st, can not believe it's already here.. We will be watching the weather closely now , waiting on a good weather window to make our crossing back over to the states...
